2003 at the Healdsburg Farmers' Market
By Renee Kiff
Spring. When a farmer's fancy turns to thoughts of planting, protecting, staking, weeding, mulching and gathering. Although just small ripples of harvest, compared to the great tsunami waves of summer, spring produce is very special, and especially green. Asparagus, lettuce, spinach, snow peas, sugar snap peas, fava beans, and spring garlic are all as green as Kermit the Frog. Like the song, "It's Not Easy Being Green," the farmers who successfully bring these crops through the winter have been well planned and active. Raised bins, fall and winter seeding, greenhouses, frost-protective covering, weeding, and constant surveillance for snails and slugs have kept these gardeners occupied. Their effort and result will be on display at farmers' markets throughout Sonoma County.
Adding spring color to the market: cut flowers. All of the spring bulbs the yellow daffodils, purple irises, peach ixias, red tulips, many-hued ranunculus and alstroemeria, white callas and lavender lilac represent a color palette all-inclusive.
Farmers' markets can provide everything you need for a beautiful picnic, even if the rain keeps you indoors.
